Gavin 2019 FFA

“This is my third year in FFA and I’m currently the Quincy FFA Vice President and District XI Secretary. FFA has improved my leadership skills and technical skills when it comes to soils, apples, equipment operation and people skills. I compete in Apple Judging, Livestock Judging, Ag Sales, Employment Skills, First Year CDE, Parliamentary Procedure, Land Judging, Agronomy, and Tractor Driving. FFA has taught me the value in hard work. And that hard work paid off when I was the State Champion Tractor Driver this fall. I like talking to people and I also got to put those skills to work when Quincy won the Hall of Chapters competition at the Washington State Convention in May of 2018. Because we did that I got to travel to the National FFA Convention in the fall to represent our state in the Hall of States Competition. And I got to talk to about 25,000 out of the 60,000 kids that were there and we ended up placing 3rd in the country. I was in my element and had a great time. FFA has allowed me to put into practice what I plan to do in my future while still in high school. My Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) project used to be raising market lambs for the fair but I decided to grow it a little bigger and planted 7 acres of ground with 76,000 pieces of root stock that are now Honeycrisp apple trees that I will lift and sell next fall. Hopefully I’ll make enough money from my SAE project to fund my college education and my start on a career in agriculture.”
