Erin 2018 FFA
“I really enjoy my activities in FFA. My project is a bull buying activity for advanced animal science. It’s for advanced Ag biology class in high school. We are given $12,000 to buy bulls at the auction. We give a description of the animals, their physical characteristics and EPDs that are associated with them. We pick the top ones for the different scenarios that we are given. At the end of the sale we will hear how much they are sold for and hope we made it under the budget. My goal is to pursue a degree in agriculture education at WSU next fall, I also compete in other science competitions. I am science all the way.
I recently had the opportunity to participate as a high school delegate at the Society for Range Management annual meeting in Sparks, Nevada. I presented about the arrival of irrigation in the Quincy Valley and the conversion of rangeland to cropland. Cattlemen were forced to adapt to the new cropland, and took on new methods of rotational grazing on crop residue in order to stay profitable. A lot of it has to do with cattle nutrition. I had a really neat experience there, learning from the other delegates from across the country, and I got to work professionally with a lot of people involved with range. Agriculture is a huge part of my life, a true passion that I’ll carry with me for a lifetime. I think it’s really neat that FFA opens the door for opportunities like the ones I’ve been blessed with.”
