Jessica 2017 FFA

“I am an Ag Teacher, as is my husband, Nathan. Our two boys grew up in FFA and 4H, and my youngest son is currently serving as a Washington State FFA Officer. My profession has opened many doors for my children, students, my husband and myself.  I cannot imagine doing anything else. Days are never dull when you start your day teaching animal science and end it with plant science—throw in physical science in agriculture and Ag biology and it keeps you on your toes. 

My boys, Lane and Luke, have learned first-hand what it takes to succeed in the agriculture industry, and they understand that even with hard work there may still be disappointments.  It is how you respond and bounce back from that defines you.  They have lost calves and goats, yet still have a passion to raise livestock.  Lane is at Oklahoma State University studying Soil Science and taking advantage of all he can do to learn more about his chosen profession.  Luke, serving as a state officer, is getting to do many exciting things—learning about the South African agriculture industry in South Africa, speaking to a senate education committee, and understanding the true meaning of “living to serve.” He plans to start college in the fall with plans to become an Ag Teacher.

One of my favorite parts of being an FFA Advisor is watching my students grow from shy freshman to facilitating leadership workshops for other students. I am amazed, but not surprised, at the young adults they become.  Business owners, livestock producers, teachers, field men for chemical companies, seed sales, and much more. I am very fortunate, I get to know these young people and it makes my heart happy when they come back and let me know how they are doing. 

Most recently, one of the most exciting things that has happened is that Nathan and I were fortunate enough to be invited to the Governor’s mansion for the official launch of the Washington FFA license plate.  It is an exciting time for FFA.
