Hunter 2017 FFA
“I am a junior and have been in FFA for three years. Some of my friends were in FFA and it looked like they were having fun, always going places, so I joined up. I am a pretty competitive person so I enjoy the contests. I like taking charge of different projects, so I think FFA had helped make me more of a leader. People look to me at different competitions because I have taken that leader roll, leading by example. FFA has helped me learn how to be a better speaker. We also do projects that help people and I really like to help people.
When I was 14 years old, I got a loan at FSA for $5,000 to invest in a cow/calf operation. I bought 4 cows from my Grandpa. And with money I had saved up from going to fair, I bought 2 more cows. I raised the calves and sold the ones I didn’t need to buy replacement heifers. I took out another $2,000 loan to buy two more cows and used money I saved to buy 4 more heifers from my uncle. I also bought a bull. I pay the loans back when I sell the calves. I am now up to 10 momma cows, 10 calves, 1 bull and three yearling heifers that I just sold to my parents. So I am gradually growing my operation. That will be my college money; I’d like to go to Montana State University. I’ve learned a lot raising cows; it’s a lot of responsibility. I learned from my family what to do and not to do when it comes to cows. I really enjoy raising them, even though it’s a lot of work.”
